Andy’s Story

Andy was a serving Officer in the Forces for 35 years. He was still serving when he had a car accident that left him with a Traumatic Brain Injury and requiring full care.

Before the accident Andy was never happier than when he was challenging himself physically.

Andy’s wife Sharon says, ‘Before the accident Andy was always doing something daft, just to prove he could! Andy was very hard to make sit still, so being able to walk on the Exo after 6 years of not walking will feel amazing to him. The Exo also wakes Andy up from his low level consciousness state, better than anything else we have tried.’

‘It would mean a great deal to use this piece of equipment on a regular basis because I think it’s waking Andy up. We would see whether this alertness, that Andy has using this, becomes permanent because he’s a lot more alert in this than I’ve seen him before. It obviously has a positive effect on people with traumatic brain injury and everyone should have the chance to use it.’

‘I’d like to try it every day for an intensive period because the positive effects last. (After using the exoskeleton) he’s more awake than he usually is in his low consciousness state. It’s alertness- that’s what we’re looking for and what it’s doing for him. It seems to be waking him up which is what we’re fighting to do constantly.’
